Described as a
performer who weaves “long lines of beauty and
strength” (Buffalo News), American cellist Natasha Farny has
appeared in multiple venues across the nation as soloist and
teacher. She has performed concertos with orchestras that
include the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the
Greeley Symphony Orchestra, the Abilene Philharmonic, the Western New
York Chamber Orchestra and the Erie Chamber Orchestra, the Juilliard
Symphony Orchestra and New Juilliard Ensemble. With the
Juilliard Symphony, she collaborated with conductor Robert Spano in the
performance of Dutilleux’s Tout un Monde Lointain, and with
the New Juilliard Ensemble, she gave a world premiere performance of
Olav Anton Thommessen’s concerto Upon Reflection.
Dr. Farny is an active recitalist and has appeared live on Chicago and
Rochester Public Radio, in Leipzig’s Mendelssohn Haus, and in
several American cities including Dallas, Tallahassee, Boston and New
York. Recently, she has appeared in concert at the Holland
Festival of Amsterdam, the Salle Pleyel at the Paris Festival
D’Automne, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the
University of the South (TN), Miami University in Ohio, and the City
University of New York at Hunter College, with programs ranging from
solo Bach to Varèse. As a chamber musician, she
concertizes frequently with the Mercury Piano trio and the contemporary
ensemble ANA.
She has appeared at numerous European music festivals including the
International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove, England, the Kronberg
Cello Festival, the Schleswig Holstein Festival, and the Leipzig
Internationales Kammermusikfestival. As a teacher, she has
given masterclasses in several universities and summer festivals,
appearing at the Quartet Program, the Tennessee Cello Workshop, Grand
Valley State University (MI) and a recent tour of Suffolk County
schools in New York’s Long Island. Currently, she
teaches at the State University of New York at Fredonia and in the
summer at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee.
After pursuing undergraduate studies at the Curtis Institute of Music
and Yale University, Dr. Farny earned a master of music degree at the
Eastman School of Music and a doctorate of musical arts degree at the
Juilliard School. A distinguished scholar in music, Dr. Farny
completed a monograph of Beethoven's Cello Sonata, Op. 102, No. 1,
under the supervision of renowned Beethoven scholar and writer Maynard
Solomon. Primary cello teachers have included such luminaries
as Orlando Cole, Ronald Feldman, Stephen Doane, Joel Krosnick, and
Harvey Shapiro; additionally, she has benefited from the tutelage of
some of the most renowned chamber ensembles in the world, including the
Juilliard String Quartet, violinist Felix Galimir, and violist Karen
Tuttle.
