Motorola Solutions to deepen African ties

Earlier this year, Motorola split into two entities: Motorola Mobility, which houses the company's mobile and home business units; and Motorola Solutions, which is home to products targeted at the enterprise and governments.

Motorola Solutions country manager Mark Kelly says SA and southern Africa are “vital” markets for the company. Motorola Solutions now wants to replicate its local offerings throughout the continent.

In its old guise, Motorola already had a “strong” presence in Nigeria, Angola and Botswana, and had done business in Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi and Namibia, says Kelly. Motorola Solutions wants to build on this network and is developing a strategic plan to deepen its presence on the continent, notes Kelly.

Kelly explains sub-Saharan Africa is one of the fastest growing economies outside of Asia. The company already has a strong channel model, which it will develop, but will also invest in facilities in Africa, he says.

The company does not split out regional revenue and Kelly was unable to provide guidance as to revenue targets, or how much it would invest in developing infrastructure in Africa. He says Motorola Solutions wants to take its “dominant position” in SA and “drive it north”, but wouldn't provide market share figures.

Motorola Solutions had a good first quarter to March as a standalone company, comments Kelly. He says the unit was 8% up quarter-on-quarter and cash flow was “substantially” higher.

Motorola Two Way Radio Versus Maplin and Doro | Walkie Talkie Radios

Article by Dominic Donaldson

As a child I yearned for the day when I would be able to legitimately use a walkie talkie. They were available in plastic toy versions with a range of about a metre, but that wasn’t enough. Now of course we live in a world where everything we could possibly imagine is barely a click away and so, with that in mind, I venture onto the net and head for Google. It doesn’t take me long and the words motorolar two way radio soon appear.

It’s a break through moment and what’s more it is just one of a number of high profile devices on the market at the moment. In this article we’ll look at what’s available and particularly two of the main rivals from Maplin and Doro.

The Motorola two way radio range is headed by the a MOTOTLKR T5. It has a range of up to 6km, a built in room monitor and timer. At 50 pound it is the ideal option for anyone wanting to be a little more adventurous in style.

We are pushing towards the top of the market here and there is good competition Maplin’s Terrain 550 PMR. This comes in a twin pack and has a range of up to 8km. It also uses something called Truesound noise reduction technology although how this works I’m not entirely sure.

If you’re looking for something a little more cost effective, you could go looking at the Dorro Wt77 PMR 8-channel pack og two. This is much more compact and lightweight and has a stated range of up to 7km. Prices range from between 15 and 25 quid so it pays to shop around.

So which is best? The motorola two way radio looks the nicest and has an impressive range of gadgets. It looks like the choice for anyone who is looking for serious usage. The Maplin has a dazzling array of technology and has a good range. For sheer usability this takes some beating. Meanwhile the Doro offers a good compact device and reasonable value, depending on where you do your shopping.

The Motorola two way radio therefore has some tought competition on its hands. The company sees itself as the undisputed king of this sector and it certainly has a good reputation. It has been working in this space for 70 years. However the firm has its work cut out if it is to stay ahead of the rest.
