North Central Baptist Hospital hosts support groups and free educational programs: couples dealing with fertility issues meet 6 to 7 p.m. every fourth Tuesday within the atrium (call 297-4483); cancer patients and their loved ones meet at 10 a.m. fourth Saturdays (297-7005); pediatric asthma education classes 9:30 a.m. each third Saturday (297-7005); gestational diabetes program starts at 9 a.m. every second and fourth Monday in the second floor education room (297-7005); expectant mothers and their families can tour the hospital's women's service area at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. each first Monday; Gamblers Anonymous, 7 p.m. Thursdays (260-2616). Free health screenings are offered 7:30 a.m.-noon Tuesdays. La Taza Coffee House, 15060 San Pedro Ave., hosts “Heartbeat of the Soul,” a weekly session of open-mike poetry at 8 p.m. Mondays as well as open-mike sessions 8 p.m. Fridays. Mary Jane Jackson Hickman, 85, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Tuesday, the April 5 at her daughter Ellen Hickman’s home in Austin. Mary Jane was born in San Antonio, Texas on the Nov. 26, 1925.
Mary Jane graduated from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio and attended U.T. Austin. She married John M. Hickman in 1945 and is survived by their daughters Susan Hickman of Austin, Texas; Ellen Hickman of Austin and her two sons, Shannon McVey and Keith Mannix, daughter Katherine Mannix; Sarah Hickman of Austin; and Mary Hickman Staewen, husband Dr. Scott Staewen and their two sons, Randal and T. Davis, of Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Hickman, in 1964, and by her husband, Merle L. Stein in 1998. Her late parents, Dr. Dudley Jackson Sr. and Dr. Martha Beal Jackson, and her brother, Dr. Dudley Jackson Jr., were also from San Antonio and long-time pioneering members of that medical community.
Mary Jane was an asset to any organization or group with which she was affiliated; including, among others, The League of Women Voters, the Bexar County Democratic Party, the San Antonio Genealogical & Historical Society, and the Witte Museum.
She was a life-long learner, becoming an amateur genealogist in her teens, and pursued all her interests with passion. She continually took college courses and was a Texas ambassadress while living in Illinois and Kansas before returning to her beloved Texas over 45 years ago. She enjoyed traveling to courthouses in many states, checking on family history; also visiting places such as Yosemite and Lost Maples Parks where she had family connections; and attending many family reunions in Bertram, Texas.
Mary Jane will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio. Any memorial service will be private. In lieu of any customary remembrances, the family requests contributions are sent to the American Cancer Society in her honor.
