Birmingham to work on growth plan for city

The City Council's Budget and Fi­nance Committee endorsed Mayor Wil­liam Bell's proposal to spend $570,000 hiring a team led by Goody, Clancy & As­sociates, a Boston-based architecture and planning firm, to develop the com­prehensive plan. The project is expected to take 18 months and would set parameters for zoning and land use throughout Birmingham for the next 20 years.

Final approval for the hires must come from the full council, which is expected to take up the proposal in about two weeks.

"Your comprehensive plan is usually your road map to developing your city," Bell said in an interview. "We can build a comprehensive plan that only fits in with the character or (that) improves the character of an area. We would look at all our land utilization throughout the city."

Andre Bittas, director of the city's Planning Engineering and Permits Department, said nine companies submitted proposals and were evaluated by a committee.

In addition to the lead firm, several other companies are included in the project proposal, Bittas said: Mt. Auburn Associates of Sumerville, Mass.; Kittelson & Associates, of Baltimore; and KPS Group, Enclave, BLOC Global, KHAFRA and NHB Group, all of Birmingham.

"We feel like we have a very strong team," Bittas said.

Councilman Steven Hoyt said he hopes the plan will help reduce blight and undesirable development in his western-area district.

"I'm just tired of how my neighborhood looks, with all these payday lending stores and liquor stores," Hoyt said.

Bittas said the recently released U.S. Census data can help the city in developing the plan, which he said would complement the Blueprint Birmingham initiative from the Birmingham Business Alliance.

The development of a new master plan was discussed at least a decade ago, but never happened. The city's 1961 comprehensive plan was modified in 1991.

 Bell said the new plan would be a working document, updated every three to five years.

The mayor cited disputes over plans for a drive-through restaurant at Five Points South and the destruction of a historic fire station in Lakeview to build a Walgreens as examples of the types of issues a master plan could address up front.

The plan would be drawn from research and comments gathered in part from interviews and a series of public meetings around the city.

Earlier during the class period we began to discuss the changes in social interactions after marriage. Despite not being married, nor engaged, andddd single, I firmly believe that after you get married the amount of social interaction between others diminishes. We see this countless time on tv, in song, movies, it is portrayed everywhere! I know because I tend to be selfish i don't like sharing especially attention amongst my significant others friends haha but I guess he can go out with his friends! Just kidding in reality it tends to be like that though After we get into relationships we stop going out to parties as much because the only thing most people do at parties is go to meet potential significant others which brings me to my next train of thought about meeting significant others. Mr.Right is not at the club grinding on Sharnetta on the wall! Nor is he at the bar buying Suzy a drink! In order to find someone we want we have to learn to go to the place to find them. If I want to find an athletic guy where should i go? Logically, The SLC and to be more exact early in the morning or late at night because those who go in the morning show that they are serious about their workouts and manage their schedules around it. If I want a Catholic....Cathloic church, if I want a alcholic I obviously need to be an avid shopper at the local Goody Goody Liquor Store. But So linking to sociology we tend to date people who are most like us because we are already involved in those activites and social groups, therefore we marry someone like us.
