HEALTH & FITNESS: Take up the Artistic Yoga challenge

Whether you yoga in a heat controlled room with sweat pouring off your body, or with sand between your toes at sunset, this body, mind and soul workout is high up on my list of recommendations for a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

But finding the right class can be a challenge. Still haven’t met your match? Well here’s another to consider.

Created and developed in 1999 by Himalayan Master Bharat Thakur, Artistic Yoga was inspired when he found that the 5,000 year old science that is Yoga had been watered down to a slow, monotonous and almost un-impacting attempt at the same old asanas.

People who had been practicing Yoga for 20 years were still pot-bellied and unfit, and Thakur wasn’t having it. So he immediately set about giving the ancient art form a revamp.

From what I gathered in my trial session, Thakur ended up creating what appears to be the new and improved Yoga of the future as it cleverly melds society’s two favourite forms of fitness: ancient yogic techniques (asanas, pranayams, bandhas, kriyas and mudras) and modern cardiovascular training.

This means you can work on all levels of yourself (physical, mental and spiritual) to achieve flexibility, strength, endurance, as well as alertness, awareness of body, and meditation all in one sitting.

Do you know what this means? Your yoga teacher is now also your personal trainer!

“In an Artistic Yoga class the idea is to change the load everyday and surprise the body so that the shift happens and the body doesn’t ever plateau. A specific body part is targeted in every class,” says Artistic Yoga representative Namita Kulkarni.

That evening we worked extensively on our midriffs and glutes through a series of huffing and puffing stretches and exercises that pushed us to the limit of abdominal pain, spine wringing and leg quivering postures that seemingly turned us inside out and upside down, and extremely fast paced sun salutations, all accompanied by soothing Eastern melodies that I’m not so sure did any soothing – thank goodness for Child’s Pose.

Why Go?

Artistic Yoga isn’t like your run-of-the-mill stretch. It’s extremely challenging with refreshing new poses and movements you might not have come across before. Even the ever popular Sun Salutations are uniquely “up tempo”.

I particularly liked that there is a different focus each class so sessions are always a surprise. Not once did my brain or body go on auto-pilot, as often happens in regular yoga classes.

Who did that? You know, that year is especially challenging, but it'll be representative of the future, yes. If you're going to be independent, if you're going to give yourself the flexibility of building your own schedule, you have to embrace that.

I thought the pacing was a little too fast in some areas, too. However, my initial thoughts were: 1) it sucks getting old and 2) that it was done intentionally to reinforce the point that if you don’t put forth the effort, the world will pass you by. But, between the information and the presentation, all I can say is, “Wow”. Well, that, and thanks.

Though others have said the pacing was a bit fast, and I had trouble keeping up at times myself, I think that the speed of the presentation actually serves as an illustration of the now now now culture upon which this presentation ws intended to comment. Its now, its immediate, or its immaterial – or so the younger generations are being progammed to believe. My only question or disbelief lies in the data quoted that a teen sent over 217,000 texts in a month. That breaks down to over 7,000 texts a day. Even sending texts to multiple recipients, I can’t imagine how a teen would have so large an address book (unless he downloaded the entire local phonebook?)

While I share your initial skepticism regarding the texting frequency, it is very often that I see teens in a restaurant or store sliding their phones open ever 3-5 seconds to read/reply to a text. I am both amazed and appalled at this frequency– the time devoted to short messages is impressive (and not something I could do), but, in my mind, they need a serious lesson on condensing or managing information into a longer message with all the details. Perhaps this is because I do not have an unlimited text plan!

One of the things I most liked about the original Did You Know was the temporal “white space” you built into it. There were a few moments for each data-point to sink into your head and resonate.

That’s missing from this latest version. The signal-to-noise ratio is much lower. Perhaps its intended audience in Oct had something to do with it — they wouldn’t sit still for the relatively slow pacing of the original.

But where once I was able to ponder each tree, now I see nothing but the forest. It still has impact, but not nearly as much for me.
